Feb 22 - Week 7

Picture of the week:

The Dunning-Kruger Effect graph—prompted by the overconfident young associate who had three “Mount Stupid” moments in one week, leading to a much-needed reality check.

Overall:

A dynamic week balancing major professional milestones, personal wins, and intellectual engagement—from Catherine’s onboarding and EOC prep to Rahul’s promotion and a book group discussion. Despite a root canal, caregiving challenges, and Boston’s treacherous ice, the week remained productive. Key themes included strategic positioning (postdoc hiring, EOC influence), leadership insights (mentorship, overconfidence), and balancing priorities (work, home, and personal growth).

Takeaways from Week

Catherine’s onboarding is progressing as expected, with initial bumps but a long-term focus on integration.

EOC panel prep received universal leadership support, setting the stage for a high-impact session next week.

Gen Z research interview with Fortune reinforced the institute’s leadership position.

Postdoc hiring idea is a forward-looking play and will be casually pitched at EOC in a high-trust setting.

Rahul’s promotion is less about title and salary and more about his steady independence and career growth.

Book group discussion on James by Percival Everett added intellectual and social depth to the week.

Proactive caregiving intervention—arranged for a care manager to check in on your father’s professional caregiver in Princeton due to declining service levels.

Boston’s icy weather made even basic movement a challenge.

Overconfident young associate had three ‘Mount Stupid’ moments, leading to a necessary sit-down conversation.

Entertainment and enrichment included a thoughtful book review of The Technological Republic and watching Double Jeopardy.

Behavioral Takeaways:

1. Leadership is about timing and positioning. The postdoc idea will be best received in an informal, high-trust setting at EOC rather than forcing a structured proposal.

2. Not everyone is ready for growth. The young associate’s overconfidence shows he’s unlikely to succeed in the rotational program. Keeping him engaged but fairly rated is the best approach.

3. Proactive leadership applies beyond work. Monitoring father’s caregiving situation and stepping in to ensure quality service reflects the same strategic approach you apply in business—ensuring standards are met while allowing room for self-correction.

4. Intellectual curiosity remains a steady pillar. Book group discussions, writing a major book review, and thoughtful entertainment (a strategic thriller) balanced the week’s professional and personal demands.

NOTES:

Work:

Catherine’s onboarding is progressing with a structured approach; Anne will support in Week 2 while EOC takes priority.

EOC panel on political volatility is fully prepped and received widespread support.

Gen Z research interview with Fortune strengthened the institute’s thought leadership position.

Postdoc hiring idea will be introduced informally at EOC as a long-term research investment.

Young associate’s overconfidence led to a necessary course correction.

Home & Family:

Rahul’s promotion at State Street was a proud moment, marking another step in his independent career journey.

Mini ordered IKEA shelving to upgrade your office from “shack-like” to a professional space.

Proactively arranged for a care manager to visit father in Princeton after noticing a decline in his caregiver’s service. Ensured father could provide direct feedback while also signaling to the caregiver that standards are being monitored.

Health & Fitness:

Root canal procedure was necessary after a tough week of pain—now on the road to recovery.

Icy Boston weather made even basic movement treacherous.

Music:

Skipped piano class due to travel, work, and the root canal—something had to give, but plan to resume in next 2 weeks.

Social & Intellectual Engagement:

Book group discussion at Landwer Café on James by Percival Everett added depth to the week.  Everyone liked it.  I kept my distaste of section III to myself.

Entertainment & Enrichment:

Book review of The Technological Republic by Alex Karp was completed—an insightful analysis of AI, governance, and strategic positioning.

Watched Double Jeopardy—a satisfying thriller, enjoyed without overanalyzing plot holes.
